'86 740 Tank pump/sender in a '95 940? 900

As previously posted, I have a 1995 940 8-valve wagon with a non-fucntional fuel gauge. I suspect it could be a wiring connection, but most say that the sender units fail frequently. So before I dump $600.00+ on a repair/replacement for the sender and pump, I though I'd check to see if the sender/pump from my 1986 740 8-valve might fit/work in my newer car.
Anyone know if these are compatable/interchangable?
