timing marks b230f 200 1989

I know this has likely been discussed to death, but at completing the tmg belt change last night, the markings on the belt would not line up with the markings on the sprockets..

OK 2 yrs ago I did it (over 100K ago...), I did not use the belt markings, just the markings on the sprockets, the engine has been running great. It was a TRW belt.

Now it's a conti belt. I verified and the markings are identical positions. Again, the sprocket markings do not line up. Anyhow I aligned the timing with the markings on the sprockets irregardless of belt lines. The cam belt mark is one tooth to the left o fthe sprocket 'dot' ('dot' at 12 o'clock). Intermidiate shaft exactly 3 o'clock, crank at around 11 o'clock (marking on front of engine, piston #1 all way up).

Just curious, are these belt markings reliable?

The plastic backing plate o nthe timing cover is well positioned and I took it off and verified the rear pin and all, it does not move so those marking are in the correct place.

Anyhow car seems perfect this morning drive to work. Identical to how it was before.

I do not recall having this issue with my 91 740 2 yrs ago (conti belt)...

Thanks,
