I just bought a 1982 244 GLT turbo, and when I took it onto the shop they told me(among other things ) that I needed a break front brake job that would run me about 500 bucks... this includes new front rotors, calipers, wheel bearing repack, pads etc. I guess these parts just wear out after a while? how do I make sure I really need to have this stuff done- or should I just trust them?
anyway- I'd like to try to do it myself and save some cash, and learn a thing or two in the process... I've never done this sort of stuff before- am I jumping in over my head? I was reading my Chilton manual last night and it looked pretty straightforward- the bleeding seemed like the most difficult part, and if I did it I'd get the bleeding tool from IPD. I was thinking about switching the rotors for cross drilled brembos on ebay (which would save me about 90 bucks off the price the shop quote for rotors) and also getting rebuilt calipers off ebay for $50 each (for a savings of about 60 bucks).
If I do it- should I also switch over to stainless steel brake lines? I was thinking they might be easy to switch while I had everything taken off- but I don't really know where they're located so maybe not. Should I do the rear brakes as well when I do the front? and what is this "wheel bearing repack" on my estimate?
Anyway- thanks for your advice, I don't want to get in over my head, but I'm also one of those poor college kids.
