overdrive question 200

I've got an overdrive unit from an '85 240 DL that I used to have ( with the M46). I was having a problem with the car not shifting out of overdrive even when I pressed the button on the shifter. The o/d would stick on all gears and the car would make a horrible sound when I tried to shift into reverse. Would this have damaged the o/d unit? I have since replaced it with a known good unit, but I'm wondering if my old one could be repaired easily.
