Can anyone tell me where the Air Mass Meter is in my '83 240/B23E, and how to disconnect it?

Can someone also tell me exactly what this does, and if I'm right in thinking it'd be part of the major problem I have with starting the engine when it's really cold(also, is it bad to leave it disconnected for several weeks until I find a new one)?
