Temperature Gauge Funky 200 1985

My car just passed smog and runs great. 1985 245 DL non-turbo wagon w/134k miles. Starting today, when I accelerate from stop (not too quickly tho), the temperature gauge rises from the 9 O'Clock position to the 10 O'Clock position for about 10 seconds, then goes back to 9 O'Clock. If I turn on the heater full blast, this does not happen. I do not have this problem at any other time. Thanks in advance!
