Finally got the head off my '84 242 turbo (blown head gasket from being over heated because of losing coolant from a leaking coolant hose). Looks like the gasket around the number 3 cylinder is a little deformed (out of round) and has a little pock mark near it. Overall, the Bentley's procedure was useful, but a bit generic. It's a fairly intuitive job to remove interference, both manifolds, and finally the head.
Although it's tempting to do the cheap thing and just slap the head back on with a new gasket, I am going to do the right thing and have the had taken to a machine shop and check it for flatness as well as inspect the valve train (seals, clearance).
While it's out, I was thinking about putting IPD's turbo performance camshaft in it. They claim it will take 3 secs off the 0 - 60 time. Anyone have experience?
As long as the head is off, I am going to replace seals, and a few vacuum hoses. Seems like this would be the time to install IPD's manual boost controller too.
Any other ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks, Tom
