I was adjusting the valves on my 760 today and pulled the dizzy cap off to inspect while I was at it. The contacts were badly oxidized and eroded. This cap and rotor set costs in the neighbourhood of 135 bucks (cdn) and was replaced three years (only about 30,000 miles) ago. I was surprized to see the poor condition it was in. Why would it deteriorate so quickly?
I used a brass brush on my Dremel to clean it up, and intend to continue using the assembly, but sure would like to know why it went bad.
Also, I tried to check the T-chain adjuster. Man, is ever hard to figure out whether it is out too far! I could not see that it was extended at all, or at least no more than 2 to 4 millimeters at worst, but getting an accurate gauge on it is impossible. There was no way that I could see any of the notches that the manual refers to. Eight MM is max allowable extension, and I eyeballed the gap on an 8mm wrench to set my eye and compare. The car has about 280,000km (175,000 miles?)on it and there seems to be a bit of chain clash noise.
TIA
