Sparkless Green Bitch 900 1995

We are still having problems getting our 1995 960 to fire. We have a second running white 1995 960 (WC), and have been swapping parts to see if we can isolate the problem. You may remember an earlier post (At wit's end with 960 wagon 1995 900) regarding what has become known as the Green Bitch (GB) at our house.

Parts we have swapped from the GB to the WC: crank position sensor, cam position sensor, Motronic Computer, Transmission Computer, ignition stages, all 6 coils, all relays and fuses, and air mass meter. We are still getting a 1-3-1 Code which says the Crank Position Sensor is not sending a signal to the Motronic. We made up a pair of jumper wires to bypass the harness, connected them thru the Motronic clamshell, it turns over but still no spark.

Our latest venture was to canablize a donor 960 engine wiring harness from a 97, and solder/shrink wrap all of the coil leads from it onto the GB harness. We tested every lead end-to-end for continuity, and every ground wire for continuity & resistance, and all tested properly. We then plugged the engine harness into the box on the fender well, and tested every connection thru the plugs for continuity. Previously we had tested all the leads from the box to the Motronic, or transmission computers, or wherever they want, and all had continuity.

While we had the intake off (for the second time) we used a file to clean up all the ground connections and connectors, and tested all for continuity. We ran a separate ground wire from the motor mount (power stage) ground, back to the ground terminal on the firewall for good measure.

After replacing the engine harness, we found that the OD Arrow, and the WSE lites for the tranny were blinking. So, now we think the PNP is bad too, but it still cranks, and we can get it into and out of Park.

Question number 1: Will the PNP switch tell the Motronic to not fire?

We have R&R the Crank Position sensor to the WC, and it starts and runs fine. R&R back in the GB, cleared the codes and cranked it for 60 seconds. We are still getting a 1-3-1 Code which says the Crank Position Sensor is not sending a signal to the Motronic. We checked the signal per the manual, and the WC reads 150 and the GB reads 140.

Question number 2: Could a partially rusty fex-plate edge inhibit the signal from the Crank Position Sensor? For some reason the flex plate was warped in this vehicle, and it was swapped out by a predecessor mechanic.

One of the mysteries of this sytem (to me) is just how it works. I have a computer programming background, so I know there is a logical flow of events that must occur to trigger all of the sensors to do their things. I have not been able to find a listing of this flow of events. We do have the TP2305201 FAULT TRACING AND SERVICE and TP3909202 WIRING DIAGRAMS Manuals, but they are not exactly forthcoming as to operation sequence of events.

Question mnumber 3: If anyone can explain to me the sequence of events all of the sensors use to work together to cause a spark, I will be eternally grateful.

By the way, we have cleaned, emory-boarded, and dielectric greased all of the connectors, and tested all of the grounds.

Thanks in advance for any help. Dave Dally, Tryghet's Dad 360-427-7686/ DavidD_TWI@msn.com
