240 Valve Adjustment Questions 200 1989

I have a couple of questions related to the adjustment discs.
1. Do the discs wear?

2. What is normally the case when there is excessive clearance; thinner or thicker discs? I have read both in these forums, and it is confusing.

3. In Bentley's Volvo 240 Service Manual, there is an 'example' in 214-4 after question 6. Is the math incorrect in this? I don't get it. I have found a number of incongruencies in the Bentley manual...Like this example. Please explain for me. Thanking you in advance,etc. etc. etc.
