alternator/battery? 200 1984

I posted a while ago when I thought it was just a guage problem but evidently I was wrong. For a while all the dash guages were reading erratically (volts,oil,etc.). Finally one day the volts guage went all the way down and the car wouldn't start on its own. I was able to jump it and drive it for a couple weeks as long as I didn't use anything electrical (lights, radio). I didn't have to jump it anymore. Then one day it died completely even just driving it during the day. Now I've had it jumped but it won't keep running when I try to drive it. The battery is about 2 1/2 years old and the people at Advance auto parts tested it and said it was the alternator. This would make sense except I recall the guy I bought it from saying the alternator had been replaced recently. Maybe he was lying but I thought I'd check with you guys to see if there might be another explanation. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
