Mig welding, Just curious on your thoughts

I know 'we' often speak of disconnecting the Neg on the battery or at least unplugging the ECU before welding. I do unplug my ECU when I have some exhaust work to fix.

What the heck do they do if you drop off your car at a Muffler shop and they weld?? I bet they don't do this. They wouldn't waste the time or try to find these ECU's in every model car. SO I wonder what the real truth is about this different ground potentials running through ones car when welding. Whether it is really detrimental to the ECU.
