Below is pasted a post I saw today: It is in a thread about the curing of shuddering steering.

By the way, Dextron-III is not suited to PS. You can substitute PS fluid with Dext-II, but not Dext-III. Dext-III WILL harm your ps.
My ride is a 1986 244GL. It has a leaky power steering system, and the replacement rack will go on soon, but...
I have been feeding the leak for a good while. Now I wonder if by using the proscribed Dexron III I have worsened the situation.
The owner's manual sez: Power steering fluid type: ATF. So I assume that means to use whatever is specified for the AT in this car.
Automatic Transmission to use ATF type Dexron IID.
The ATF I have been using in the PS is Dexron III Mercon. The can sez it's OK for earlier Dexron types.
Now comes the above-pasted post saying otherwise.
Is that post OK? Must I go search for Dexron II, since it's not at my usual supply house (AutoZone).
Thanks you-all,
Bob
