The discussion of tool loaning and special tools (such as the upper inner bushing installation jig) has gotten me thinking about an online tool sharing database. I know that I have tools which I rarely use (hub puller, engine hoist etc.) and there are tools which I often have to make only to use them once (like if someone made a nice bushing installation jig). I also find that there are tools that I need which I would only use once or twice (bore gauge). I was actually thinking about this idea right before folks started offering up thier pullers.
It would be great if we had an online database where users could enter what region they live in, what tools they would feel comfortable offering up, under what conditions they will lend them out (deposit?), and even if they would be willing to ship them (smaller items and borrower pays shipping of course). It seems to be a logical extension to this our virtual community. It would also serve to make our community a bit less virtual. I know there are a lot of trust issues involved but it seems like there should be a way to work things out so everyone involved feels comfortable.
I don't know who could host the database (Brickboard would be ideal), but it doesn't seem like it would that hard for a competent webbie to put together a rudimentary site. Just an idea. What do y'all think?
