89 245 Solenoid Replacement

Hi! I am new to the forum. I have an 89 245, which possibly needs a new OD solenoid. I was reading a post from Jan that seemed to give a good description of the job. I was wondering if anyone had any useful info for a first timer. Also is it a must to drop the tranny or can it be done without doing this. I would really rather not mess with the tranny if at all possible.
