Some strange electrical problems... 200 1980

First of several threads I'll be starting about my '80 tonight.

I was driving along on the freeway tonight when the car had a couple of quick drops in voltage. (While I don't have a Voltmeter in the car, I did have a very crude way of knowing the voltage dropped: I was playing a tape in the 8-track player and the tape slowed down a couple of times for no reason (it's not the player, I know that.) It slowed down the same way it does when I bench test it with out enough voltage going into it.

My "AMP" light has been glowing dimly recently anyhow, so I figure this is all related... The AMP light gets brighter when I put more load on car (IE: turning the Brights on makes the AMP light get a bit brighter, turning on the heater fan does the same thing, etc...) It's not glowing full red, but it's enough to really notice these days.

My car has been this way for a little while, and I've kept driving along, but I haven't had that significant voltage drop before today.

Also, the big thing that kind of startled me: I was driving along after having just gotten off the free way, when the car with in a matter of a second (or so) lost all electrical power (All lights went completely dark, Radio dropped out, etc...) with the amp light glowing fully during the second or so that the car was dead) and then suddenly regaining everything. It was fast enough that the car didn't stall.

Anyone have any idea what that that is about?

Just my luck I'm supposed to take this thing on a long trip tomorrow. I don't know if it's going to make it in its current state...

More threads to come about other problems. Thanks as always.
