Loss of Power Mystery - Calling all Experts

Clues:

1. Driving on freeway, car running fine, all of a sudden, nearly all power is
lost. Able to make it a little ways to the freeway exit, throttle nearly to the floor.

2. Can't exceed 2500-3000 rpm as engine starts pinging badly.

3. Will restart, idle very rough, hardly enough power to move car from stop on level ground. Can't go any faster than about 25mph. Engine shaking badly. Not enough power to go up a hill.

4. No problem lights on dash indicated.

5. Call shop and discuss problem while stranded. Suggest changing knock sensor. Several hours later, I replace knock sensor roadside. Restart engine, same problem. Just after starting, the air conditioner on switch (blue light) flashes momentarily and then normalizes. No other problem lights indicated.

6. Attempt to drive a few blocks. Not enough power. Unsafe to do so. Stop car and have car towed. Shop thinking sounds like an AMM problem. Start car at shop. Immediately state not an AMM issue. Something else.

Now, this is the first time this car has been towed. Well maintained. Only broke down once with failed climate control plastic valve. I was able to resolve that roadside. Has been very reliable past 10+ years. This is the car we take on our vacations.

What could be causing this loss of power? Car is essentially undrivable. Starts fine. Idles very rough. Pings very bad. It almost appears that it is drivable, but as soon as a load is placed on it, such as attemping to move forward, there is almost zero power.
