Got a 1981 242 B21F with an M46 4 speed + OD transmission. Just recently, it started "surging" on the freeway; that is to say, it would come out of overdrive and drive in 4th, then go back into overdrive, then back into 4th and so on.
Basically the RPMS would jump up by about 1100 and then fall back down to normal, then surge up again, just as if I had been rapidly shifting between 4th gear and Overdrive.
However, the OD light stays on the whole time this is happening. There is no surging at all when I am not in overdrive. Needless to say this is pretty dangerous on the freeway.
What do I need to do to fix this? OD relay? Solenoid? Wiring?
IPD is only a half hour away, so parts are easy to get... but for now I'm stuck with a four speed tranny :(
