1994 940 Heater Valve 900

I installed a new heater valve. It started leaking. I had the arrow facing so that it pointed to the heater core. So I turned it around with the arrow I beleive facing toward the engine block and it stopped leaking. What direction is the arrow on the valve supposed to face? If I put it on backward and made it leak, could it have damaged it?
