Charging AC

Hi,
I have a question about my Volvo ac, please help.
It is 1990 240DL (CA version). The sticker on the engine compartment says it is R-12, but the hi/lo ports in the back of compressor are quick disconnect type (exact as R-134a connector). Am I looking at the wrong place because I believe charging freon is from the back of the compressor?
Is there an adapter from 12 to 134a?
