Stuck in reverse 700 1991

Help,
My wife called from the train station. The shift will not engage into drive- it is stuck in reverse. When she tried to put the car into drive it still went into reverse. It seemed like the gears were floating -her description. it reminds me of a linkage cable problem.
ANY CLUES?
