Hello - I need some help. My 1992 volvo 240 failed the smog test based on "Functionality" - the smog place said that the timing / distributor was at 12 degrees after TDC instead of before. So i took it to my volvo mechanic, but he said that the timing was correct, and that the smog place must just be reading it wrong. went back to smog place, and their very competent head mechanic looked at it and said no, it appears that either the pully is worn out or the distributor was put in wrong, because it is definitely reading the correct degrees, but after TDC instead of before. Also, as this is a 92, note that the timing is non-adjustable. SO, i took it BACK to the mechanic, and a different technician examined it this time, and again said no, nothing wrong with the pully or the distributor, they look fine. So i don't know what to do. Should I just take it to a different smog place and see what they say (and if they say the same thing about the timing, make the mechanic pay for the cost of the second test?) or should I let the smog place take out the distributor and reinstall it? Thanks!
