The starter solenoid on my 93 940 Turbo failed a few weeks back. I got a rebuilt starter from Canadian Tire. It came in a box with the Champion brand on it. This had me concerned. Curiously, one of the casings (I think the one on the solenoid) had Chrysler stamped on it, but the starter itself had Bosch on it, so I figured I was OK. Anyone had experience with rebuilt starters not being genuine Bosch?
Everything seemed fine until today. My wife started the car, but after it started, I could hear the starter sounding like it was re-engaging. I thought maybe the ignition was stuck in the start position. My wife complained that it was sounding wierd, and I could hear it from outside the car, but I was in a hurry and didn't want to deal with it. I popped the hood anyway while it was still running, and a bit of smoke was wafting out from the driver's side of the engine. We shut off the ignition, and the starter was still running!
I went to grab a wrench to disconnect the battery, and it finally stopped.
Because of the following:
- this never happened with the old starter
- it was happening with the key in both the ON positions, and the OFF postition
. . . I'm assuming that this is a stuck solenoid issue, not an issue with the ignition feeding 12 volts to the solenoid. Anyone have a different opinion?
If for some reason it does turn out to be the ignition, I'm thinking it would be prudent to replace the starter anyway, after it having been driven at idle for several minutes, and smoke coming out of it. Am I over-reacting?
My son started the car a couple of times afterwards, and it seemed to act normal. I'm thinking that when I have time tomorrow, I'll use a starter switch on it, to see if it ever doesn't release correctly on any of the attempts. If the solenoid is the problem, presumably this will trigger the issue. If this doesn't, I'll put a meter on the solenoid terminal, and monitor the voltage on repeated starts, to ensure that 12 volts only appears with the key in the START position.
Any comments and feedback appreciated.
