Temp sender doesnt fit... im about to cry 200 1985

I just spent an hour and a bit removing the standard water temp gauge sender from my B23E only to find that the new sender and adapters DO NOT fit the hole. IS this a fixable problem- wil i need to search to find the correct adapter, or can i use the factory volvo sender for an aftermarket elec. temp gauge.
