It's time for an oil change, and this will be my first DIY oil change on my '89. Well, since I have a gallon of Valvoline 10W40, a new Mann filter, and an IPD magnetic drain plug, I'm gonna do it myself this time, as I've done it on my '83 before, but it has been so long. The only reason I haven't done my own oil changes on my '89 is that there is a heat shield on the manifold thing making replacing the oil filter a bit of a pain. I have found out that I can access the filter from underneath the car on the passenger side if I turn the wheels at a far angle to the left. Well, since it has been quite a while since my last DIY oil change, I kinda forgot some things. Questions:
1. Can the Mann filter be unscrewed by hand? (On my '83, I used FRAM filters, which have a shaped end where I can cap it with a filter tool attached to a rachet wrench.)
2. Seeing that the Mann filter is just smooth all around, do I hand torque it? No tools needed to tighten?
3. This might cause a heated debate: change oil when it's HOT or COLD? I've been told that one should drive the car and get it to operating temp. before oil change; this way crud gets loosened and drain out more easily. I'd done that with the '83 oil changes. I need to know just for the record.
Thanks.
