Battery discharge diagnosis

Have had a 940 for a year now, no problems til last week when it intermittently stalled and 'died'. I found the battery was discharged (reading <11.7v). Now I have only a very old charger (select from 6v/12v and 6amp/12amp). Set it to 12v/6amp and left for 7 hours. Meter said it was charging at around 4-5 amps and seems ok (now reads 12.7v when in car).

This is my wife's car and I have to go away so I'm worried that there may be another problem or the charging won't last - is there any reason why the battery fully discharges so rapidly (not had any starting/running problems before).

Thanks...
