240 gear Indicator P,R,1,2,D HELP NEEDED 200 1991

I recently purchased a 1991 240 sedan. The gear shifter selector boot P,R,1,2,D for a unknown reason had been removed. It was in the glove box. One would think the Knob with the push button would have to come off to allow the selector to slide down the shift lever to be fastened to the floor. I have examined the knob carefully and can not come up with the way to remove. Does anyone know how to get the plastic gear indicator in place around the shift lever?
