I am considering upgrading my 88 wagon with either a better cam, (can't remember which is an upgrade but I'll search for it on brickboard) or an adjustable timing gear. I have a NA 240 engine with the 5 speed manual tranny.
Would I be correct in assuming the cam replacement would be the better choice? I figure I could always set the timing forward or back on my own. Whereas the cam would put a permanent change in the opening and closing of exh and intake valves.
Are there any concerns with changing out the cam on a high mileage engine? I have 226K miles presently. I add about 1/2 qt oil between (3K oil changes).
Any advice is greatly appreciated. I like my car, just wish I could pass more than the occasional vw bus.
Thanks
Mike
