A/C pipes leaking my money all over the pavement 700

88 744t w/267k. I came across a post that stated that Volvo published a service bulletin saying that the A/C "muffler" is not necessary for proper/efficient operation of the A/C system. This is the the part underneath the passenger side that is about the size of an elongated pop can and connected underneath the car to a hose coming from the compressor and at the other end connects to the evaporator in front of the grill.

The reason I ask is because mine is rusted into smitherines and I replaced it w/ a used one only to have that one develope leaks as well. Goodbye $40 dollars of refrigerant. Thus, I would like to know what people have done and if you replaced the entire pipe/contraption with another hose (which I would like to do) from where did you acquire this piece? Big thanks from hot/humid PA.
