Well all I can say to start with is don't even think of using Dex for anything that has copper, brass or tin based solders but Im sure you already knew that. The reason I write this is 2 fold, one to reinforce what has been said and proven in the past and the second is a request for information on a radiator. I'm sure you can guess what happened here. I ran Dex in my 760 turbodiesel for a short time only because that's what was available at a good price, read free. Everything was fine and dandy but then the supply ran out because the promo was over and having the water seal break behind the pump I lost the coolant so had to go back to the green coolant after a good flush. Everything was still fine at this point 2 years back but this summer my 760 started pushing the temp gauge over to the far right of the scale. I flushed the system out, ran pressure tests and even verified the gauge itself but it still ran hot. I broke down and slid a standard 700 gas radiator in place and even with the A/C running it never made it to the center mark on the gauge. Curious...
I pulled the tanks off my diesel radiator and saw the reasons behind the overheating, the entire hot side of the tank was covered in the brown crust of corroded solder in fact it was so bad that only 25 passages were somewhat open to water flow and they were located at the very top, 12 front and 11 rear tubes were flowing. At this point i decided to try cleaning up the damage and maybe salvage the radiator however after my core rod pierced a tube and shoved that corrosion out I gave up, it is damn near impossible to clean out that corrosion and it looks like the only repair is to replace or recore the radiator and thats rather expensive either way.
So right now Im running a B230 style radiator however had to make a custom upper hose to clear the power steering pump and even without the shroud everything is running pretty good, I do want to find the correct length radiator.
So my question is this: was the diesel radiator specific to the diesel only or was there a long tank radiator used on maybe the B28 powered 700's? I cant see Volvo spec'ing a radiator for just the diesel but I have no real way of finding out if anything else will interchange. Someone here maybe know?
Thanks and dont use Dexcool bad bad bad bad..
