Help with my 81 240 - please.

My ole' reliable 81 240 GLT (B21F 4speed OD) died on me yesterday as I was backing out of a parking space. I bought this car to do a Ford V8 swap (about 4 years ago) but I fell in love with the reliability of this great car and decided to just drive it a few hundred thousand more miles. I really want 500,000 miles with no rebuilds. I think I have to replace the original clutch sometime this decade because all of my driving is stop and go traffic.
The engine was fully warmed up, it just had a 10 mile drive home in 90+F heat. Full tank of gas (from the same pump I always buy from). I replaced the CIS pump because it was getting noisy and I had a good one in my "junk pile" I tested the in tank pump before I replaced the CIS pump by disconecting the inlet hose to the CIS pump and jumpering the fuel pump relay. The in tank pump still "goes like a race horse" after 234,000 miles. I tested the CIS pump after the almost new fuel filter - lots of fuel pressure (and fuel everywhere). The car has spark from the coil wire.
When I jump the fuel pump relay and crank over the engine I get nothing but an occasional "poof" from the exhaust. I have not yet checked for a broken timing belt - but with a nice spark from the coil this seems unlikely.
What can be wrong? CIS with spark and fuel pressure should at least fire. I wish I had the Bentley manual but I don't (it's on order now) I have never had to do anything with this car other than oil changes. I was happy to redo the suspension bushings, brakes, rack, bilsteins and cut diesel springs plus my required Recaro seat (lousy back). I really like this car and want to get it going again. HELP.
Thank you in advance
Steve Bliss. Volvoless :( - driving my "somewhat large" F-350 crewcab diesel that gets 20MPG and has 700 foot pounds of torque. I either drive the big ass truck or drive the 914 to work - the 914 is 1 for 5 in getting towed home while driving to work. It is now the engine swap candidate, the volvo does its job very, very well and I can safely put kids in it because it is airbag hazard free.

Thanks again for the help.
