Back in June I had an electrical short that caused a fire. The A/C auxillary fan, located just inside the grill, (A/C fan motor) burned out and the associated wiring was fried. I've since purchased and installed a replacement fan and was planning on rewiring it when questions I couldn't answer surfaced:
1. My A/C hasn't worked as long as I've owned this car - 1991 940 turbo wagon.
So, do I really need an A/C auxillary fan? The belt driven fan would seem to do the necessary cooling.
2. On the other hand, if the fan wasn't necessary, why did it fail?
3. It comforts me that the source of power for this fan extended back to the positive battery cable, so I'm quite certain that no other wiring was affected/damaged by the fire.
Note: The A/C auxillary fan is wired to a sensor/relay mounted on the coolant reservoir as well as to connections on the rediator. I believe when the radiator gets hot enough, the relay triggers the auxillary fan to run enabling it to aid in cooling. I guess this would answer #3 above, but is it necessary?
What advice would you give me??
