Opinions needed about A/C conversion and leaking lines 700 1990

A/C on '90 740 GLE has big leak detected by service guy. He wants to replace lines and recharge with R12 for $400.00. Ouch! I called around to hydraulics businesses and was told I could have new lines for $35.00 each. Sounds better, no?

So first question, can I drive w/o lines while they are fixed? Should I take this opportunity to convert to 134a? Is the removal of lines a difficult job, if there is good link please help. Thank You so much.
