964 trunk S90-V90

I was working out of the trunk with the car running, AC on. I noticed that cool air was blowing from some holes in the rear deck just behind the speakers. The holes are under the hollow tunnel section that continues across the back deck from the shoulder belt slots. Is this a mistake, or a design? Something to add positive pressure to the trunk to keep out exhaust fumes?
