Overdrive comes on in heat 200 1989

Hi all,

When driving my 240 during the summer months, occasionally the overdrive light will come on if I'm sitting in traffic. I can't figure out why this would happen. Would excessive heat cause it to somehow come on? I'm in Northern California and for the past 3 or 4 weeks the temp has been above 100 degrees, so I've been seeing the OD light quite often (the "up arrow" on the dash lights is OD, right?).

Not having had OD before, and never actually using t, I'm not too familiar with the system or it's purpose. Is it just used when you need that extra oomph?

Thanks.
