Everyone! Don't miss this if they are near by. Super nice people.
Nice "driver" volvos. They might need your help. Pass it on, Pay it
forward.

Went there yesterday and it was great. One of the PV was running very
rich...open the bonnet(hood) only to find a B18 (in a 1953 444) with a
single Solex downdraft. Might have been a Zenith but certainly not
familiar to a USA Volvo person. Tried to figure out the problem and
first step was to replace. In typical USA male fashion, put in a new
one and fix the old one when they has a couple of days in a row.
Dashed home (3 miles) to get a nice pair of SU HS6 with all the
linkages and attachment pieces including a manifold. Even brought a
Weber 32/36 complete and some HIF6 (2 pair) plus extra manifolds and
tools. Wanted to make sure they had choices and let them pick. Since
there are 50 plus cars and many are 122, a selection of Dual SU's felt
right. They have 2 mechanics with them but they were still at the
last stop dealing with a head gasket in PA. I did't want to proceed
without the approval of these two professionals. Once back to the
hotel, discovery of a one piece intake/exhaust was determined so off
went another local Volvo person to search through back room pile of
old parts for a donation. This setup has a "Single" lower pipe. Yet
again an unusual (for USA) setup. All the ones I have are take offs
of those cast iron double butterfly but these have a double outlet. Or
headers. Local volvo guy comes back without the proper exhaust
manifold so the only options are to cut existing intake /exhaust
manifold and we just think that is irresponsible. So the owner and
gathered group decide to open the carb and have a look around.
Everything looks fine and we blow and suck through the lines and put
it back together. Start it up and the external leaks are gone (fumes
in the cabin) but it still runs poorly. I pull the plugs and they are
sooty or black and wet.(I don't think there is a dutch word for "Soot"
Open the oil filler and there is lots of smoke. My guess is a valves
or rings but they were leaving in the morning... so we buttoned it up
and retired for the evening around midnight. I went back in the
morning around 8:00am and all but a few were already on the road to
Detroit.

All in all I felt great that I was there to help and you will too.
There are 50+ cars and this was the first week. As they proceed west
there will be more isssues and since I have been known to travel some
distances, it's good to know someone is willing and able to help when
you are away from home. So, meet up with them if you can and ask if
you can help... They are on an adventure and can use an angel.
Ultimatly, I didn't help but I think they left Buffalo with a little
more confidence that they will complete their journey.
