'72 144

Today I had to make a panic stop and had very poor response...almost the same feeling as having a failed booster but with even less braking power. This was quite unsettling! When I slammed on the pedal, it didn't go down very far and there was a "sproingy" noise somewhere but I could not isolate or duplicate it on my own.

Normal stops seem fine.

Within the past 2-3 years, I have replaced the master cylinder, pads and flex hoses. I can push all the pads back into the calipers easily, so I don't think it is caliper related (four rebuilt calipers within 5 years).

I guess the only things left would be the rigid lines (don't think I've ever seen those go bad), the splitter where the brake failure switch screws into, or the proportioning valves for the rear brakes. Never hear much about those failing either.

Any ideas? This episode was pretty scary. Would it be better to fix the brakes or raise my liability insurance!
