The next project car is a 1988 744Ti M46od with 160K.
It needs a headliner (of course). I have read through the FAQ's and John was kind enough to share a file covering the sunroof procedure and a page that addresses the headliner.
Has anyone ever gotten the backer board out of the car in one piece? The opening for the sunroof makes for a number of breaking points. If anyone has ever gotten a backer board (especially one with a sunroof) out in one piece please step forward and be recognized!
I have the luxury of having a 1990 744 parts car. I decided to attempt getting the backer board out of it first. Promptly broke the left front corner off (broke at the rearview mirror/sunroof motor, and at the back of the sunroof opening). Even with that large portion off it still was a squeeze through the passenger's door. The lower edge wedged against the console.
It is also a very messy job. The fabric fell off completely once it was loose at the edges. Pieces of sticky foam followed to land on the dash, seats, carpet and rear shelf; a real mess. The more I struggled with trying to find a way to get it out the more material fell off. Not a big deal in a parts car but the interior of the 88 744 is exceptionally clean at this point.
Has anyone ever removed the backer board through the rear window opening? I removed the trim on the rear window of the parts car. The window is a "glue in" but it seems to be a different material than they use on the windshields. I think "sawing" the rear window out with a piece of wire (procedure successfully used on windshields) and gluing it back in after replacing the backer board might be a less frustrating (and time consuming) job. Anyone have any thoughts on that? Anyone here ever replace a sedan rear window?
Thanks for your input.
