loud whizzing sound 200

My daughter phoned me with car trouble questions. She turned the ignition key on her 1989 240 and it produced a "loud whizzing noise" --- retrying and removing the key made no difference. The sound persisted for 15 minutes, then, it stopped. Silence.

After that the engine started & ran normally.

This is the second such episode in three months.

Last time, my wife & her friends said it sounded like a fan. It wouldn't stop. Her friends disconnected the battery because it wouldn't stop & the engine couldn't be started. The next morning it started fine.

Is it the ignition switch?
