1984 240GL B23E vacuum question 200 1984

Hello,

I recently replaced the water pump, headgasket, timing belt, spark plugs and plug leads on my 84 240 GL (Australian). I have also just replaced some cracked vacuum hose that went from a T-piece that connected to the distributor. My question is, several vacuum lines connect to a device between the battery and the coil, but what is this device and what are the proper connections to it? I imagine it's some kind of vacuum relay or something... but I don't know. One of the connections to this unit is empty... but is it meant to be? The device is about the size of a hockey puck. If you can assist I'd like to know what each vacuum connection is meant to go to, and how I can test it to see if it's working properly. My purpose is to eliminate variables in pursuit of getting my Volvo timed properly.

Thank you,
cf
