88 wagon smokes on startup

We just "acquired" an 88 240 wagon with 220K. If it's sat more than a few hours (i.e. every morning), it blows a large puff of grey smoke at startup. Other than that, it's great and gets almost 30mpg.
Is there anything I can do to prevent the smoke (it's pretty nasty)? Is it a sign of things to come?
