88 wagon smokes on startup

Are you adding any coolant or oil? Otherwise maybe an "Italian tune up" is in order. Lots of gas and no parts!
Actually you might check the PCV system since whatever is creating the smoke is either in the combustion chamber or is being drawn in through the intake or ports. Is the engine sludgy, valve guides and seals are not usually a Volvo problem though.
Maybe an injector that leaks down overnight.Try some good fuel system cleaner.
