Transmission Fluid Flush 200 1987

This afternoon I am going to flush my transmission. I am all prepared and the Redline MTL is sitting at my house. Doing a little more research I have found posts that say that I need to also drop the pan, clean the filter and change the gaskets.
Will I damage the transmission if I dont clean the filter? If so, do I have to have new gaskets to clean the filter?

I do not want to sound lazy, but I figure every time I open up my car and attempt a repair I also risk the chance of opening up a can of worms and making problems worse. The transmission flush seemed doable for my limited skills, whereas the filter seems a little more difficult.

Thanks for the help,
Doug
