hi fellow Volvoheads,
I was wondering if you could give me some suggestions regarding the purchase o a 91 744 turbo with the aw71 tranny?
I really have wanted one of these cars for a long time, and now I've been forced into purchasing an au tranny car that can handle higher speeds, that will also meet the needs of being serviceable by myself.
I have considered thsi car as well as some Toyota Cressidas, and e28 BMW 5 series', but the Volvo seem sot fit the bill the best for my needs.
I was wondering if you could give me some pointers on this car, as to what I should look out for. it's siver, only has 161000kms(about 100k miles) with black leather and it's fully loaded. I'm more concerned with inspecting the turbo, and the tranny, as the b230ft motor on these cars are pretty much indestructable from what I hear.
In concern to the tranny, what about hard shifts? I recently drove a 90 740 GL that had hard shifts (also with over 340,000kms), and I thought it may have needed a auto tranny service (new bearings etc.) i think the aw71 is a better tranny overall, in protecting against these type of problems. The color should be red from what I hear, but the smell seems to be more impt.
Also, I really don't know how to inspect the trubo charger...is there any tell-tale signs of trouble I should look out for?
If there's anythign I've left out, please tell me, as I've never owned an auto car with turbo (or even a turbo car for that matter!).
TIA
P.S. are bad headliners an issue on these cars as wel as earlier 740's?
