heater thermostat 120-130

I have recently fixed the rusty floor pans with por 15, which brought me to fixing the leak. The water is clearing dripping in from the entire heater set up.

The problem is (or at least i think) that the PO did not have the thermostat correctly hooked up. The thick wire that sends the temp to the thermostat goes between the two halves of the heater creating a gap. i can see the water drip from this side (passenger) of the heater box, so i assume the giant crack is keeping the two sides from joining.

Where is the correct place to have the "sensitive head for thermostat" if not where it is? i cant quite understand the picture my haynes is showing me.

Thanks all,
Devin
