M41 whine 1800

Hi all,
My M41 gearbox in the 1973 ES1800 has developed a whine in all gears but 4th. Any ideas on what is going on ? At first I thought layshaft bearings, but then someone pointed out that the layshaft is always turning. Are gears 1,2 and 3 part of a cluster with bearings to the layshaft? Someone has suggested a "worn bearing between the first and third motion shafts, since those two shafts are
always turing at different speeds until 4th or direct is engaged by locking the two shafts together." But looking at my Volvo manual I cant see what is meant by a "motion shaft".
Any help greatly appreciated.
Cheers
