Better mileage with 87 octane !!!! 700

So i've been going back and forth between using 87 octane and 91 octane on my 87 745 turbo intercooler.
And always had a suspicion i was getting better gas mileage out of the 87 octane.
just normal commute to work everyday 17miles each way no traffic.
untill last week were i took a 1500 mile trip and decided to split the gas each way gees what avg. 27-28 on 87 octane and 22-23 on 91 octane.
what gives? the car feel no dif. using either but with with 87 it will knock for a sec. under heavy right foot.

is my timing so off that 87 is better?

Thank you
