A/C - Dashboard warning lights 700 1990

On my 1990 Volvo 740GL the A/C compressor cycles about every 10 to 30
seconds, when the a/c clutch kicks in, the dashboard warning lights flash, (it is really kind of a "slow" flash, and the engine speed doesn't seem to matter, although at higher than an idle the lights do seem brighter)the a/c compressor clutch releases and in a few seconds it happens again. The system was charged a few weeks ago, so I don't think that it is low on refrigerant.

Every once in a while, this problem doesn't happen and the A/C blows cold - seems normal.
Any ideas on what to check or replace?
