MPG / torque converter / differential / 1994 940 / oh my! 900

Hello,
Like everyone else these days I'm starting to obsess about mpg. I've always kind of obsessed about it but Katrina is really forcing the issue.

I've read that one can decrease the gearing on the rear differential to improve gas mileage. What does this involve?
Do you need to replace the differential or just some gears?
I have a bunch of volvos at my disposal -- everything from late 70s 200s to mid 90s 850s. I have a 1994 940 wagon. How do I figure out what my gearing currently is, and which volvo differential to switch it with?

Also, I've read that a locking torque converter is preferential for gas mileage. What is the difference between a locking torque converter and a normal torque converter? How do I tell which I have (again, I have a 1994 940 wagon w/ over drive auto tranny)? If I don't have one, what car can I pull one from that will be compatible? (As I said, I have a bunch of parts volvos at my disposal).

What synthetic is best for the differential? How much does it take? What about the power steering?
