Leaking water pump 200 1989

It's more like weeping. Some history. I've noticed there was weeping from the water pump about two years ago. The leak is very noticeable during cold mornings before car has started. Seems like the seals relax during colder temp. and coolant seeps out over night (not a puddle, but you can see coolant near the seals and a towel will soak it up). But then it seems the seals seal up after the engine has been warmed and no coolant leaks. Is this normal?

I see coolant on top of the pump, around the seal and "fins" of the pump. There might be a leak from the bottom too or maybe the coolant drips down and onto the alternator and onto the bar with the rubber accordian boot and then onto the belly pan and sometimes drips onto the driveway. Not much, I take it as there is no big puddle. This issue has come to my attention again after seeing a small drip stain about 4" in dia. on the driveway this evening, and I decided to investigate it more. I did make a short errand earlier that day.

I did an archive search, and this thread can pertain to my situation: http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/volvo-580686.html

Btw, what do people mean when they say a "seized pump"? What are the warning signs that a water pump is going to seize?

I'm not an advance DIY, so this is a job for pros here. How much dough are we talking about if people say I need a new pump? Thanks, bricknuts.
